The Rabbit Ate My Flip-Flops Release Date and Pre-order!

I'm super excited to announce that The Rabbit Ate My Homework is now available for pre-order on Amazon! Official launch day is September 16, 2015! Mark your calendars!

You can’t bring a rabbit camping. That’s what eleven-year-old Drew Montgomery’s grandparents say when his annoying little sister wants to bring their pet rabbit, Tiny, along on the trip. And Drew agrees. It's bad enough that he will miss the release of the coolest video game of the year while he's stuck in a cramped travel trailer for a week with his grandparents and sister. But Tiny is certain to cause trouble. Plus there are bears and eagles in the woods. And what if Tiny gets lost?

But Libby smuggles the rabbit into the trailer anyway. Now Drew’s got to keep Tiny out of trouble. And that’s not easy to do with Libby always letting him out of the cage and a pair of rabbit-hating bullies ready to let their dog chomp him if he gets too close.

Top it off with never-ending rain, bloodthirsty mosquitos, a broken toilet, stinky outhouses, angry squirrels, terrible food, and an eye-gougingly boring “schedule of activities.” Drew is about ready to take the rabbit and hitchhike home before disaster really strikes.

The Rabbit Ate My Flip-Flops Sneak Peek!

I'm very excited to share the first chapter of Book Two of the Rabbit Ate My Series (coming in 2015)!

Chapter One

Time to Go

I stare at my computer screen and sigh. On the screen, a picture of a super-cool looking space station hovers in front of a swirling alien planet and a vast starry background. Above it, in large glowing green letters it reads, "Galaxy Guilds: Connect. Construct. Conquer." Beneath it, a countdown timer ticks down the minutes. 20:42:16. Less than a day until the coolest game of the year--the game my best friend Quentin and I have been waiting ages to play--finally releases, and am I going to be around to play it? Nope.

I'm going to be stuck in a camper with my annoying little sister, Libby, and my grandparents in a campground in the middle of nowhere. Why? Because Mom has to go to a conference in Hawaii for her job at the insurance company and Dad is going, too. So that means nobody will be here to take care of me and Libby. And since Nana and Papa are going camping this week, they thought we should come with them. Oh, and did I mention this camping trip is an annual thing Nana and Papa do every year with a bunch of other old people they've known since Dad was a kid?

I sigh again.

Just then a Skype message chirps. It's Quentin.

Blog Hop Pitch Polish

Well, I didn't get into the official Pitch Polish, so I'm participating in the blog hop. I'll be hopping around to give a hand to the other blog hoppers as time permits this week.

Anyway, here's my pitch and first 150 words.

In Need of a Catchy Title

Titles come to me any number of ways. Sometimes a catchy title pops into my head and I just have to write a story to go with it. This happened with my yet-to-be-published middle-grade novel, The Rabbit Ate My Homework, and a recently written short story, Free to Good Home.

If a title doesn't come to me before the story is completed, I'll go back after the fact and comb through it to find a descriptive phrase or line that fits the story. Listen to the Rain and my upcoming chick-lit novelette, How to Cook Up a Disaster, were titled this way.

Sometimes I choose a symbol, image, or object that represents the story. That's how The Perfect Ring and Fallen Leaves got their titles.

There's as many ways to title a story as there are stories to be titled. Here's a really great article on titling: Choosing the Right Name For Your Story.

Right now, I'm in the process of bundling several of my short stories (Fallen Leaves, Listen to the Rain, Caring For Lily, For Good or For Bad, and a bonus story, Is This Seat Taken?) into a themed collection. The theme that seems to run through these stories is choices, and how the choices we make affect our lives in good and bad ways.

However, I am having the worst time picking a title for this series (even after reading that excellent article and several more like it!).

Novel, Novella, Novelette? (What the heck?)

Probably 99% of the population knows what a novel* is. It's a work of fiction. Usually 300-400 pages (80,000 to 100,000 words) long. It's got chapters. It's got characters and plots and sub-plots. And it can take hours and hours to read, even if you're a fast reader like me.

But you ask readers if they know what a novella or a novelette are, and they start scratching their heads (at least the readers I asked sure did!).

So what exactly is a novella and a novelette?
